This is a cool thing I was "enlightened" about. This is a realization of why social media, videogames, drugs and even pornography is bad for you.
We have this chemical in our brain called dopamine. It helps us to do stuff. This chemical is considered as a reward for doing an action (easy or hard). The more we get this chemical in our brain, the more the brain thinks we are doing something that helps in moving our life forward.
In reality, however, dopamine can be produced from stuff like instant gratification methods as well, thus the reason, some people get addicted to these habits or substances. Remember that dopamine is not infinite (if it were, then we could have done anything) but finite in our brain. Finite as in so much could be produced in a day.
Imagine the dopamine finiteness as a bag of dopamine you have for throughout the day. This depletes everytime you do an action. Some actions take more dopamine than others. Sex or even mastrubation is a good example for huge dopamine drainers. Social media for 1 or 2 seconds doesn't drain that much of dopamine, but we don't spend 1 or 2 seconds right, ney, we spend hours (due to the addicting nature of algorithms trained on our metadata). Thus leading to draining of lots of dopamine.
However, if we do actions that are "good" (Programming a tool you always wanted, working on your buisness, I guess job ???, building or imporving new or old relationships, exercising). They take little dopamine at the start but as time poured on it goes on, the dopamine drained is huge.
Now, dopaminism doesn't ask you to do the actions that are "good" but, like I said , the brain thinks we are doing something that helps move our life forward.
Dopaminism tells you to first define a good place and a bad place (yes YOU), this good place for you could be being the best programmer there is, opening up a cafe shop or even stuff that is considered "bad", like collecting a catalog of porn or hentai to jerk of too, bingeing the whole one piece anime or even finishing and buying a lot of games. Now the bad place, is something you don't want to be or don't want to be at. The definitions are your choice.
We now draw a line between the good place and bad place. You can draw your good and bad place on either side of the line (or just list it out as good and bad place). Now in the middle of the line you put a dot. This dot represents you. On top of the line, you draw a big circle, this is filled with dopamine.
Here comes the cool part, list out the actions that will lead to the good place (if you dont know, one habit that is good is always researching about the ways to reach your goal). You can also list out the actions that will make you go towards the bad place.
Now, I could say STOP DOING THE ACTIONS THAT LEAD YOU TO THE BAD PLACE, but I will tell you the reason why you shouldn't do them. See the circle on top of the line, the big circle, those actions deplete your energy ball (that circle full of dopamine), thus there is so little energy you have to do the bad stuff.
Another reason is that, the bad actions you do can do two things, either lead you to the bad place or make you stagnant on the line. You don't move to bad or good place.
I see this as a misuse of our dopamine fuel, we need to efficientl-- I'm just kidding, the best thing you can do is be wary of the dopamine reserves you have and try to move towards the good place.
PS: It is also perfectly normal to change your good place and bad place in this life of yours. We are never static, we are dynamic creatures. Our thoughts, actions, habits can change with time.
Remember, however that the line you drawn has a full stop at some point in time, before you reach that stop line keep on moving towards that good place even if its miniscule amount.
